Agronomic Practices

Field Preparation

* Cotton is suited for growing in black cotton soil.
* Cotton requires deep soil for the development of strong root system
* Deep ploughing once in three years is recommended.
* Remains of previous crops and stubble should be removed prior to field preparation.
* Field is prepared for sowing the rain fed cotton by harrowing 3-4 times with the blade harrows.
* Field should be leveled with the help of pata or Leveler.
* The land is to be given a deep ploughing only once in 4-5 years to remove weeds.
* If the field is having weed problem then stale seed bed technique can be used.
* Let a heavy flush of weeds emerge and be destroyed with herbicide before sowing the crop,
   without any tillage on it.
* Most of the weeds seeds germinate from the top 5 cm of soil surface in about a weeks time,
these weed seedlings can be destroyed either with a contact herbicide or by shallow type tillage
implement like a spike tooth harrow.
* In stale seed bed technique depending upon the availability of time and resources one or two
flushes of weeds can be destroyed before planting of the crop.

Seed & Sowing

* The sowing of cotton can be done on flat beds, on ridges and in furrows.
* A seed rate of 15-25 kg/ha in case of American cotton and 10-18 kg/ha in case of desi
   cottons are recommended.
* The depth of seed placement should be 2.5 to 3.00 cms.
* A spacing of 75-90 cm between the rows are generally recommended for cotton raising
   under irrigated conditions.
* For rain fed conditions a spacing of 45-60 cm between the rows are recommended.

Harvest

* Cotton is harvested in 3-4 pickings by hand as the boll mature.
* The number of pickings varies with the maturity habit of the variety.
* Cotton from damaged boll should not be kept with good quality cotton.
* Never pick wet cotton.
* On dew days, pick cotton in late mornings to avoid moisture in cotton.
