Agronomic Practices

Field Preparation

  • The crop grown in shallow light red or brownish loams or light sandy soil, yield more.
  • Field should be prepared in advance with good drainage and well leveled for timely sowing.
  • Two deep ploughing followed by harrowing and planking should be done.

Seed & Sowing

  • Seed treatment with Thiram or Captam @ 3 g/kg seed or before sowing.
  • 5-6 kg/ha seed is needed for broadcasting while 4-5 kg seed/ha for line sowing.
  • The optimum sowing time is middle of July to early August for kharif crop and September for pre rabi crop.

Harvest

  • The crop should be harvested when leaves dry up and the head turns blackish in color.
