Agronomic Practices

Field Preparation

  • One or two ploughing followed by 2-3 harrowing are to be done for pulverization and fine tilt required for good germination and plant stand.

  • Keep the field weed free and perfectly leveled to avoid water logging to which sesamum is highly sensitive.

  • If the field is having weed problem then stale seed bed  technique can be used.

  • Let a heavy flush of weeds emerge and be destroyed with herbicide before sowing the crop, without any tillage on it.

  • Most of the weeds seeds germinate from the top 5cm of soil surface in about a weeks time, these weed seedlings can be destroyed either with a contact herbicide or by shallow type tillage implement like a spike tooth harrow.

  • In stale seed bed technique depending upon the availability of time and resources one or two flushes of weeds can be destroyed before planting of the crop.

Seed & Sowing

  • For the prevention of seedlings from seed and soil borne pathogens, use only seeds treated with Thiram @ 3 g/kg or Thiram (0.15%)+ Bavistin (0.05%) 1:1 ratio.
  • Wherever bacterial leaf spot/blight disease is a problem, soak the seed for 30 min in 0.025% solution of Agrimycin-100 prior to seeding.

Harvest

  • The best time of harvesting is when the leaves turn yellow and start drooping whereas the capsules are still greenish.
